Estuaire has analyzed thousands of flights across European airspace to rank airlines by their CO₂ emissions per available seat kilometer, the industry's key metric for fuel efficiency and carbon intensity.

This year's findings highlight how aircraft technology, operational strategy, and route planning combine to define environmental performance.

The top three performers are Wizz Air UK, PLAY airlines, and Wizz Air Malta.

What sets these carriers apart?

They operate latest-generation aircraft with high-density seating configurations and focus on longer flight segments that amortize the energy-intensive climb phase across more distance.Which leads to significantly lower emissions per seat offered compared to industry averages.

Beyond narrow-body operations, widebody efficiency leaders include French bee and Evelop Airlines, demonstrating that long-haul carriers can also achieve impressive carbon intensity metrics.

However, as our full index reveals, relative efficiency tells only part of the sustainability story, absolute emissions volumes and operational scale matter equally in assessing overall climate impact.
